Did I just type that? Football on my blog? That just doesn't seem right. (If it doesn't to you either, then just skip below the photos for a more normal Rachel-post. If you are from here (Wisconsin that is) or were sports-crazed as a kid, read on.)
I have never been a football fan. I was a baseball girl all the way. Growing up in suburban Milwaukee I spent my summers playing softball with my neighborhood friends and attending home games for the Brewers every chance I got. I had a Robin Yount scrapbook (and prerequisite crush) in childhood and my best birthday as a kid was spent at County Stadium when opening day coincided with my tenth birthday and a Saturday... a kid's dream come true. I still have pennants in the basement.
But I digress.
The point is, there was no room in my tomboy-brain for two obsessions so football never stood a chance. I didn't get it and I didn't like it.
But this winter something funny has happened. I happened upon a game at my parents' house a few weeks ago. And I kind of dug it. There was one more Packers game before the Superbowl and I found myself wanting to watch it. Actually thinking about football and not in the "will-someone-please-shut-off-that-stupid-game" sort of way. Soon I heard that the Packers were going to the Superbowl. And I was stoked. About football. Perplexing.
So yesterday with the help of a friend I figured out how to watch a game on the computer (watching a game proves to be tricky when you are not tech savvy and have no TV). We invited over some other non-TV friends and stood in the kitchen with the computer hauled half-way out of the office - cooking dinner, feeding children, washing dishes, and shouting like crazy people for a few hours. And then, after the kids fell asleep it happened - we won the Superbowl! And the Vince Lombardi trophy is coming home to Green Bay. And I think I might now be a football fan (gasp). It took most of 40 years but here we are. My dad must be delirious.
As for the rest of our weekend?
The rest of the weekend looked more like my normal life. Good food, good tea, not enough sleep, some casting off and some casting on, a bit of sewing, kid-crafting, playing in the snow, and woodworking.
The weather warmed up during the past couple of days and and we reveled in the 30-some degree weather. Lupine even asked to go outside (as opposed to the normal cajoling that is required to get her in her snowsuit) and she and I made a "snow sister" while Sage worked on a surprise in the garage with Pete. The surprise was a new toolbox for Lupine, stocked with tools that Sage thrifted for her "because she didn't have her own tools." How sweet is that? And his woodworking skills are pretty impressive.
Oh, and all of that yarn? Those are the two wool sweaters that I thrifted. Today I'm off to my local yarn shop for some dye and then I'll set to work on my sweater and Sage's. Maybe winter's not so bad after all.
