Six years ago we were living The Dream. Twenty-five acres of woods. A beautiful off-grid solar home. Chickens. Wood-fired hot tub. Paradise.
But we were tired of being "those people on the hill" outside of a small town that we didn't belong in. Tired of people thinking our son was a girl ("but that hair?!") (okay, so he is really pretty, but still). And most of all, we were tired of being apart.
Pete worked over an hour away in Madison, installing solar panels like those that powered our home. The irony was the carbon footprint of his commute negated the environmental benefits of our low-e life. I worked nights in my soap business (then Queen Bee Soaps, now LuSa Organics) making product and filling orders while Pete and our son Sage slept.
We were ready for something more.
We sat with pen and paper one weekend and sketched our life. We wanted to be together for three meals a day. To work, play, and homeschool together. To have another baby and all be together, almost all of the time. To live among kindred spirits. We wanted community, simplicity, substance.
So we jumped.
Pete quit his job. We moved to our favorite small town on earth, Viroqua, Wisconsin. We moved out of our (beautiful solar) home and into a (quirky old) ranch house in town. And we couldn't be happier.
Our daughter Lupine was born and we set our new life in motion to create meaning everyday through our work, play, and rhythm of living. Together.
This blog is, like everything in our life, a mix of personal and professional. Here I will muse about essential oils and the nuances of the latest lather, and share thoughts on unschooling, peaceful parenting, and jam making. I'm bound to give away more product than I should, and maybe even give you some recipes for making your own.
But most of the time we'll just visit and share stories and photos of this life we are crafting with our own hands, day by day.
Mostly this space exists so that you can get to know me through this window into my world. It isn't the whole picture, but it's pretty darn close.
Let us know what you think. We're glad to have you along on this journey.
Peace,
Rachel
